Maybe he made up the E to sound spiffier. Or his publisher did :-)

Maybe there was already a popular author of the time called S. Maturin-with-no-E, so our guy had to pick something different. Maybe Samuel Maturin wrote something dodgy, 50 Shades of Navy Blue or something.

Oh good god. There go the plot bunnies hopping about madly. Fifty of them. Holy fu------

If "Samuel Maturin" did write something of the sort, I am sure that it would be our Stephen in pseudonym! (He's so sneaky, he would think: No one would suspect me of writing such a thing under my own name. Therefore they will all think it is someone else entirely, coincidentally using my name as a nom-de-plume, or just happening to be another Maturin.

Alright, remember that "missing year" fic I suggested we all co-write like the Journeyad? I have a theme for it: "Forty-Nine and a Half Weeks".

I found one Charles Robert Maturin, a writer of romances and gothic plays. He wrote something called Women; or, Pour Et Contre; a Tale.
