wanting in penetration

I made a circuitous attempt at enlightening him a little, but he looked very knowing and said, "Don't tell me about rears and vices; I have been in the Navy all my life."'
'Then surely he must be wanting a little in penetration?'
'James, I trust there was no mens rea in that remark?'

I like the movie version from a few years ago :-)

(also it must be pointed out for the sake of ITV's pride that they made the version with Pullings and Warley in it, not the BBC. I'm not fond of it myself, but it's always good to see the BBC having a bit of competition!)

ITV made Hornblower and Sharpe, as well as several Austens, and Downton Abbey... but it's true, we all think of costume dramas as the BBC's.

There was a cute behind-the-scenes bit in the making-of, with Warley trying to do the hornpipe and everyone laughing at him.

I don't think I've seen the Nicholas Nickleby.
