...and I am still wondering about the "E".

Maybe Esteban? Even though that is just his name in Spanish. Or Catalan if you prefer ;-)

I always thought it was E for Esteban, too. Glad I'm not the only one. :D

Shame we cannot ask Weir, because Stephen Stephen Maturin does not really make sense?

I guess so, or as alltoseek suggested "Etienne", but essentially Stephen Stephen Maturin does not really make sense. Shame we cannot ask Weir.

His Catalan relatives call him Esteve... but why would he publish using two initials for one name? It's a rather nice idea that he shares a name with his cousin Edward, though.

Might just be the initials of whoever made the prop!

That would be shallow, wouldn't it, in a movie so given to correct details? *g*

Tea and scones?

There are cousins Edward and Eduardo. Hm...I can relate to Stephen with a double surname but funnily not with a Middle name. Would Jack have one?

But you could get away with it, because everyone would think, "Oh, the prop guy must know something we don't!" and then they'd go away and starting wondering, "Esteban, Eduardo...?" and nobody would know that it was really S[tuart] E[vans] from set design all along. It's foolproof!

Ooh yes please to the scones *holds out plate*

He probably would - most English people have, and there's a good chance his was Edward too! - but I don't think it's ever mentioned, is it?

Would Jack have one?
If he did wouldn't it have been on his orders when he was given command of the Sophie? And he only ever signs Jno Aubrey on his reports, rather Jno Bartholemew Wilfred Augustus, (or Jno B W A Aubrey) or whatever.

..and Stephen signs S. Maturin..., so I do not think there were any Middle names to begin with.

Mind, coffee and scones? There are double cream and eldeberry jam to go with it.:)
