I made a circuitous attempt at enlightening him a little, but he looked very knowing and said, "Don't tell me about rears and vices; I have been in the Navy all my life."'
'Then surely he must be wanting a little in penetration?'
'James, I trust there was no mens rea in that remark?'
(chapter five)

Date: 2012-01-31 07:14 pm (UTC)I made a remarkable discovery when I was reading last night: the whole 'Rears and Vices' thing is not a POB original - it's Jane Austen! And, even better, she puts the words in the mouth of a woman!!! (Sorry if you all know this already....)
"My home at my uncle's brought me acquainted with a circle of admirals. Of Rears and Vices I saw enough. Now do not be suspecting me of a pun, I entreat."
Miss Crawford to Edmund Bertram, Mansfield Park

I have loved the rears and vices quote for a long time. It is a most charming nod to the lady genius.
I believe Jack's (and our) favourite First was in the 2007 version of Mansfield Park

I must have read it before and not thought over-much about it, but I think this is my first re-read of M.P. since reading POB

Date: 2012-02-02 05:49 am (UTC)I am so used to the Beeb doing the period stuff.
Weren't Pullings and Warley cute? I was really pleased to see them together. They do lend themselves to period pieces. Wasn't there a Nicholas Nickleby with Pullings, Hollum and Killick?

Date: 2012-02-02 03:12 pm (UTC)There was a cute behind-the-scenes bit in the making-of, with Warley trying to do the hornpipe and everyone laughing at him.
I don't think I've seen the Nicholas Nickleby.

Date: 2012-01-31 08:33 pm (UTC)He was quite wiling to do so from the first book onwards. How could he do anything less when Jack had already instructed the carpenter ...to have a look at the bulkhead of my sleeping-cabin and see what you can do to make it a little more roomy for a friend: you may be able to shift it for'ard a good six inches. :D

Jack is always willing to give a friend six inches of his ...
Actually, out of context that may also make it in to The Right Words...!
