Oh! I was going to post this today as well, I do love it, it's so very upfront and cheeky! And don't you just love the way Dillon does not actually answer?

I made a remarkable discovery when I was reading last night: the whole 'Rears and Vices' thing is not a POB original - it's Jane Austen! And, even better, she puts the words in the mouth of a woman!!! (Sorry if you all know this already....)

I have loved the rears and vices quote for a long time. It is a most charming nod to the lady genius.

Do you mean the film? Because its in my edition of the book which dates back to my student days in the mid 1980s.

I must have read it before and not thought over-much about it, but I think this is my first re-read of M.P. since reading POB

I've known the quote for ages but only made the connection sometime in the early nineties when I had started to read O'Brian and then went back to re-reading Austen. :D

I only wanted to point towards this nice BBC production of Mansfield Park because it has 'Warley' and 'Pullings' in it. *g* The actors are much suited for period drama ;D

(also it must be pointed out for the sake of ITV's pride that they made the version with Pullings and Warley in it, not the BBC. I'm not fond of it myself, but it's always good to see the BBC having a bit of competition!)

Weren't Pullings and Warley cute? I was really pleased to see them together. They do lend themselves to period pieces. Wasn't there a Nicholas Nickleby with Pullings, Hollum and Killick?

ITV made Hornblower and Sharpe, as well as several Austens, and Downton Abbey... but it's true, we all think of costume dramas as the BBC's.

There was a cute behind-the-scenes bit in the making-of, with Warley trying to do the hornpipe and everyone laughing at him.

I don't think I've seen the Nicholas Nickleby.

He was quite wiling to do so from the first book onwards. How could he do anything less when Jack had already instructed the carpenter ...to have a look at the bulkhead of my sleeping-cabin and see what you can do to make it a little more roomy for a friend: you may be able to shift it for'ard a good six inches. :D
